Overnight works planned as Station Street gets a fresh surface
Three-week highways scheme scheduled for nights to minimise disruption in Burton town centre
Drivers and businesses in Burton can expect smoother journeys next month, as a key town centre route is set for a major refresh - with work planned overnight to avoid causing daytime disruption.
A £208,000 highways scheme from Staffordshire County Council will see Station Street resurfaced from the Burton Place car park entrance on Worthington Way down to The Dial on Station Street.
Work is due to begin on Monday 11 May and is expected to take around three weeks to complete. The resurfacing will take place overnight from Monday evenings through to Friday mornings, meaning the road should remain open as usual during the day.
There will be no overnight works at weekends or on bank holidays. Alongside the new surface, crews will repair ironworks, clear drains and paint fresh road markings - giving the route a proper tidy-up rather than just a quick dab of tarmac and crossed fingers.
Businesses will remain open as usual throughout the scheme, and pedestrian access will be maintained.
Peter Mason, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said: “It’s great to see another key route in Burton being improved. This scheme will give Worthington Way a much-needed new surface, making journeys smoother and safer for everyone who uses it.
“We know roadworks can be disruptive, so we’ve carefully planned this alongside the Derby Road scheme, with most of the work taking place overnight to keep disruption to a minimum. Once complete, people will really notice the difference these repairs make.”
The works have also been coordinated with the Derby Road resurfacing scheme, which begins on the same day, to make sure closures are not in place at the same time.
So, while there may be some overnight activity, the good news is that Burton should keep moving during the day - and Station Street should soon feel a fair bit smoother under the wheels. |
