Clean Air Day: Burton's air is getting cleaner - and we can help keep it that way

As Clean Air Day arrives on 18 June, new figures show air quality across East Staffordshire is improving, with Burton's last remaining pollution hotspot continuing to head in the right direction.

Tomorrow (Thursday 18 June) is Clean Air Day, the UK's largest campaign dedicated to improving air quality - and there's some encouraging news for Burton-on-Trent residents.

While air pollution remains a major health issue across the country, East Staffordshire's air quality has been steadily improving in recent years. In fact, Burton's last remaining Air Quality Management Area, at Derby Turn, has now recorded nitrogen dioxide levels below the annual target for three consecutive years.

That might not sound especially exciting, but it is a significant milestone. If the trend continues, the area could eventually lose its special pollution-monitoring status altogether – a sign that local air quality has improved substantially.

Perhaps even better, residents can see the data for themselves. The EarthSense public air quality portal allows anyone to check air quality levels across East Staffordshire in real time, offering a fascinating glimpse into what we're actually breathing day to day.

The progress hasn't happened by accident. Schools, businesses, local organisations and residents have all played a part.

Across the borough, 15 schools are now involved in Staffordshire County Council's Air Aware Project. Pupils have been leading anti-idling campaigns outside school gates, while dedicated "School Streets" schemes are being trialled at two Burton primary schools to reduce traffic and pollution at busy drop-off times.

Public transport is also becoming cleaner. New electric buses are now operating on Routes 2, 8 and 9, helping to reduce emissions compared

with older diesel vehicles.

Of course, Clean Air Day isn't just about celebrating progress. It's also a reminder that small everyday choices can make a difference.

If you're looking to do your bit, here are a few simple ideas:

• Walk, cycle or use public transport for shorter journeys where possible.

• If you're waiting in traffic or outside a school, switch your engine off rather than leaving it idling.

• Drive smoothly and avoid harsh acceleration and braking.

• Consider an electric or hybrid vehicle when it's time to replace your current car.

• If you use a wood burner, make sure you're burning dry, approved fuel in a modern appliance.

• Choose fragrance-free household products and low-VOC paints where possible.

• Combine online shopping orders and select greener delivery options when available.

The reality is that Burton already enjoys relatively good air quality compared with many urban areas. Clean Air Day is an opportunity to appreciate that progress and make sure it continues.

You can check local air quality conditions for yourself using the EarthSense portal at portal.earthsense.co.uk/EastStaffordshirePublic.

After all, it's not often we're encouraged to stop and appreciate something we can't actually see. In Burton's case, that's probably a good sign.
