Burton's Sonic Boom strikes a chord with Government

If you needed another excuse to look forward to this year's Sonic Boom Festival, here it is. Burton's biggest music celebration has just landed on the Government's radar after being singled out as an example of how live music can help bring towns to life.

The free festival has been featured in the Government's new Turn It Up national music strategy, which highlights projects across the country that are helping local music scenes to thrive.

For Burton, that's quite an accolade.

Since launching in 2024, Sonic Boom has attracted more than 10,000 people into the town centre, filling pubs, bars and venues with live music while giving local artists the chance to perform alongside nationally recognised acts. Last year's festival saw indie favourites The K's and Everything Everything top the bill, with music taking place across ten venues.

The Government report also shines a spotlight on the festival's wider impact. It praises the TURBO training programme, which has given more than 50 young people hands-on experience in the live music industry, and highlights plans to create a permanent grassroots music venue in Burton to support local talent all year round.

The report estimates that Sonic Boom generated £2.34 of value for every £1 invested, underlining the benefits the festival brings to the town beyond a great day out.

Councillor Michael Fitzpatrick, Leader of East Staffordshire Borough Council, welcomed the recognition.

 

"It's fantastic to see Burton's Sonic Boom Festival recognised on the national stage. The festival has quickly become a showcase for our town, attracting thousands of visitors while creating opportunities for local musicians, businesses and young people.

 

"This recognition demonstrates what can be achieved when local organisations, volunteers and partners work together to create something special for the community."

This year's Sonic Boom Festival takes place on Saturday 12 September, promising another packed day of free live music across Burton town centre.
