Crowdfunder Launched to Help Secure Future of Historic Sinai Site
Historic Shobnall site at centre of major heritage funding bid
One of Burton’s most historic buildings could be set for a new chapter after a major crowdfunding campaign was launched to support the future of Sinai Park House in Shobnall.
The appeal was officially unveiled during the recent “A Celebration of Rebirth for Sinai” event, attended by local supporters and community figures including Branston Town Council Mayor Andrew Riley.
Trustees behind the project have submitted a £3.8 million bid to the National Lottery Heritage Fund, with the crowdfunding campaign designed to help provide the match funding needed as part of the application.
Sinai Park House is believed to be the oldest surviving building in Burton and is the last remaining part of the medieval Burton Monastery, once one of the country’s largest monasteries during the Middle Ages. Parts of the site date back centuries, although some areas are now in urgent need of repair and restoration work.
The new fundraiser aims to raise £20,000 and supporters hope the campaign will strengthen the case for preserving the historic site for future generations.
The launch event in May celebrated renewal, nature and community, with visitors enjoying guided walks, traditional crafts and a ceremonial arch created by students from Burton and South Derbyshire College. The arch was decorated with hawthorn, a plant traditionally linked with spring and good fortune - adding a fitting seasonal touch to the celebrations.
Organisers are also encouraging residents to take time to explore Burton’s local heritage sites and reconnect with some of the town’s lesser-known history.
Further information about the campaign can be found on the Crowdfunder website.
