Children and young people can hop aboard participating buses across Staffordshire for free throughout August, giving families a cheaper way to get out and about during the summer holidays.

The Summer Bus Fare Offer means children aged five to 15 can travel free on participating local bus services across the county for the rest of the month.

The scheme could come in particularly handy for Burton families planning summer days out, trips to leisure attractions, sports activities, libraries and community events – or simply looking for something to do without adding another travel bill to the holiday budget.

It forms part of the Government’s Great British Summer Savings programme, which is designed to help families make the most of the school break while keeping costs down.

Andrew Mynors, Cabinet Member for Connectivity at Staffordshire County Council, said:

“I'm delighted that children and young people across Staffordshire will be able to travel for free by bus throughout August thanks to this Government funding.

“Buses play a vital role in connecting people to the things that matter most, whether that's visiting friends and family, taking part in activities, enjoying our libraries and country parks, or discovering some of the fantastic attractions Staffordshire has to offer.

“Free travel will help families make the most of the summer holidays while keeping more money in their pockets at what can be an expensive time of year. We hope as many people as possible will take advantage of the scheme and see where the bus can take them this summer.”

The free travel offer only applies to participating bus services, so families should check with their bus operator before setting off to make sure their route is included and whether any conditions apply.

Still, for youngsters wondering where their next August adventure might take them, the answer could now be: wherever the bus goes – with the added bonus that Mum and Dad don't have to pay for their seat.
