New Mayor Takes the Chain in East Staffordshire
Councillor Monica Holton steps into the mayoral role with a focus on community support, prevention work, and four local charities close to home.
East Staffordshire has a new Mayor - and Burton’s civic chain is now in the hands of someone who has spent more than two decades helping people through difficult times.
Following the Annual Council meeting on Friday 15 May, Councillor Monica Holton was officially appointed as the new Mayor of East Staffordshire. Councillor Arshad Afsar was also appointed as Deputy Mayor.
Cllr Holton brings 26 years of experience working in the voluntary sector, with much of her work centred on crisis prevention and supporting vulnerable people. It’s a background that feels rather fitting for a role built on community spirit, public service, and attending enough events to make even the most seasoned diary give up in protest.
Speaking after her appointment, Cllr Holton said:
As part of her mayoral year, Cllr Holton will be supporting four local charities:
The chosen charities reflect a strong focus on support services across the borough, from helping young people and older residents to supporting victims of domestic abuse.
The role of Mayor is largely ceremonial, but it remains an important part of local life in East Staffordshire, representing the borough at civic events, community celebrations, charity fundraisers, and official occasions throughout the year. |
