Could YOU Be the King (or Queen) of Tutbury Castle? |
Historic Tutbury Castle seeks new ruler to turn its 11th-century walls into a thriving hub for events, weddings, and heritage fun. |
If you’ve ever fancied ruling over your very own castle — without the inconvenience of an invading army - now might be your moment.
Tutbury Castle, Burton’s very own slice of medieval history, is on the lookout for a new operator. The Duchy of Lancaster, which owns the site, has tasked property specialists Savills with finding someone to take the reins and breathe new life into this historic gem.
Dating back to 1071, the Norman fortress has seen more than its fair share of drama - civil wars, sieges, and the occasional royal guest. These days, the opportunities are a little more peaceful: think weddings, reenactments, public events, or even the odd medieval banquet if you’re feeling authentic.
The entire site — including the castle ruins, grounds, and buildings — covers around 3,846 sq ft. Within that, you’ll find a commercial kitchen, function rooms, a café, offices, and toilets, along with the remains of the moat, a ticket office cabin, gardens, parking, and more. |
Since becoming vacant in 2024, the site has been getting a £1.2 million facelift to preserve its historic fabric - work due to finish later this year. That means the lucky new operator will be getting the keys to a castle that’s freshly spruced up and ready for action.
Tutbury Castle’s history is the stuff of legend: gifted to Norman baron Henry de Ferrers in the 11th century, it later became home to the Earls and Dukes of Lancaster before being damaged during the English Civil War in 1646. The ruins that remain are now one of Staffordshire’s most loved landmarks.
So, whether you’re a history buff, a budding events entrepreneur, or simply someone who’s always wanted to say “Welcome to my castle,” this could be your once-in-a-lifetime chance.
Just remember - crowns are not included in the lease. |
