Bringing The Human Touch Back To Eye Care: Meet Optical People In Burton

In a world of rushed appointments and automation, one Burton optician is putting people, compassion and personal service back at the heart of eye care.

When it comes to choosing an optician, most people are looking for the same basic thing: an eye test, perhaps a new pair of glasses, and then back to everyday life.

But step inside Optical People in Burton and you'll quickly discover that this is no ordinary optician.

Located in Coopers Square, Optical People has built its reputation around something increasingly rare in today's world - genuine human care. While many businesses are becoming more automated, more rushed and more transactional, Optical People has chosen a different path. One built on compassion, expertise, personal service and taking the time to truly look after people.

Leading the Burton practice is Director Karamdeep, whose passion for eye care is evident from the moment he starts talking about the profession he loves.

"I've always been fascinated by how the eyes work," he explains. "I realised early on that good vision changes everything - from a child's ability to learn to an older person's independence. Being able to help people with something so fundamental to their daily life felt like a meaningful way to spend my career."

That passion eventually led him to Optical People, but not before gaining extensive experience with many of the major high street optical chains.

Having seen first-hand how larger organisations often operate, Karamdeep knew there was an opportunity to do things differently.

"Having worked for all the major High Street Opticians throughout my career, I wanted to do things my way," he says. "Optical People was founded with a clear vision: to bring the human touch back to eye care. In a world of automation and rushed appointments, we wanted to create a practice where people felt genuinely listened to, properly cared for and never rushed."

That philosophy is at the heart of everything they do.

Although the Burton practice only opened its doors in November 2025, the team has already made a significant impact on the local community. They've supported local fundraising initiatives including Burton Hope and Race for Life, and Karamdeep is keen for those community connections to continue growing.

"Burton is a town with real character and a strong sense of community," he says. "We chose to be here because we wanted to serve people who value independent businesses and personal service."

It's clear that becoming part of the local community is important to him.

"What I enjoy most is recognising our patients around town - at the shops, at events - and knowing we've helped so many of our neighbours see better. We're not just an optician in Burton; we're part of Burton."

More Than Just An Eye Test

One of the most striking things about Optical People is how differently they view the patient experience.

Many opticians focus purely on eyesight. Optical People focuses on people.

"We always say we're not just here to test your eyes - we're here to make sure you leave feeling clearer, happier and completely looked after," says Karamdeep.

From the moment a patient walks through the door, the emphasis is on making them feel comfortable and welcome.

The practice has been deliberately designed to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and appointments are longer than those offered by many larger chains.

Patients are greeted personally, procedures are explained clearly, and there is always time to ask questions.

In fact, one of the most common comments they hear from first-time visitors is:  "I wish I'd come here sooner."

People are often surprised by how thorough the examinations are and how much time the team takes to explain everything in plain English rather than overwhelming them with technical jargon.

For nervous patients, this approach can be transformational.

"We completely understand," says Karamdeep. "There's no rush, no pressure and we'll explain everything before we do it. You're in control throughout."

And yes, if you're wondering, there's usually a cup of tea or coffee available too.

Glasses That Change More Than Vision

While eye health is the foundation of the business, Optical People is equally passionate about helping people feel confident in their appearance.

This is where their popular Frame Styling Consultation comes into its own.

Rather than simply handing customers a tray of frames and asking them to choose, the team takes the time to understand each person's face shape, colouring, lifestyle and personal style.

The goal is simple: finding glasses that people genuinely love wearing.

"It's not about what's trendy or expensive," says Karamdeep. "It's about what works for you."

That approach has led to some remarkable moments.

One story that particularly stood out involved a customer who had worn virtually the same style of glasses for more than twenty years.

She was nervous about making a change and convinced nothing else would suit her.

The team gently encouraged her to try something completely different.

A bolder shape.  A warmer colour.

Something she would never have chosen herself.

"When she put them on and looked in the mirror, she actually gasped," recalls Karamdeep. "She said, 'I look young again.'"

She left the practice beaming.

It's exactly the kind of transformation that Optical People loves creating.

As Karamdeep points out, glasses are often the first thing people notice about us.

"They sit right in the middle of your face. They can transform your whole look."

Their frame collection reflects this philosophy.

Alongside well-known brands such as Ray-Ban, Tom Ford, Kurt Geiger and Oakley, customers will also find independent designers offering distinctive styles that aren't available in every high street optician.

Brands such as Dirty Jackson, Klos Olsen and Mika have become particularly popular, with some customers leaving with multiple pairs after discovering just how enjoyable choosing glasses can be.

Expertise That Makes A Difference

While stylish frames are important, it's the clinical expertise behind the scenes that truly sets Optical People apart.

The practice has developed a reputation for helping patients with complex prescriptions, unusual vision challenges and those seeking second opinions.

They have invested heavily in advanced diagnostic technology, including OCT scanning equipment that allows them to examine eye health in extraordinary detail.

However, one story shared by Karamdeep demonstrates why thorough examinations matter so much.

A routine eye test with an elderly gentleman led to the discovery of a suspicious lesion on his nose.

Concerned by what he saw, Karamdeep arranged an urgent referral.

A few weeks later, the gentleman returned to the practice with some life-changing news.

The lesion had been identified as melanoma.

Fortunately, because it had been spotted early, treatment could begin quickly.

"He came back and said, 'You saved my life,'" recalls Karamdeep.

It's a powerful reminder that eye examinations aren't just about vision.

They're also an important health check.

In fact, routine eye tests can sometimes identify signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, glaucoma and other serious health conditions long before symptoms become obvious.

"Early detection saves sight," says Karamdeep. "And sometimes it can save lives too."

Fast Service When It Matters Most

Another feature that makes Optical People unique is its fully equipped on-site glazing laboratory.

For many single-vision prescriptions, glasses can be manufactured within just one hour.

It's a service that has helped countless people in difficult situations.

Holidaymakers who have broken their glasses the day before travelling.

Parents whose children have misplaced their only pair just before important exams.

Professionals facing crucial presentations with damaged spectacles.

Being able to tell someone, "Don't worry, we'll have these ready in an hour," often brings immediate relief.

"It's one of the best parts of having our own lab," says Karamdeep.

A Practice Built On Values

Spend any time talking to Karamdeep and one thing becomes obvious.

Optical People isn't driven by sales targets or corporate quotas.

It's driven by values.

Compassion.

Expertise.

Integrity.

The team genuinely believes in putting patients first.

"We hire for attitude as much as skill," he explains. "We can train someone to do an eye test, but we can't train them to be kind."

That commitment extends to every aspect of the business.

If a patient doesn't need new glasses, they'll be told.

If a referral is the best option, they'll make it.

If somebody needs extra time, they'll get it.

As an independent practice, they have the freedom to make decisions based entirely on what's best for the patient.

"We answer to our patients, not a head office," says Karamdeep.

Looking To The Future

The future looks bright for Optical People.

The business is preparing to open a new store in Nottingham, bringing its unique approach to eye care to even more people.

Yet despite the expansion, Karamdeep is clear about what matters most.

"Growth isn't the goal; excellence is."

It's a refreshing perspective in an age where bigger is often seen as better.

For Optical People, success is measured differently.

It's measured in the trust of patients.

The confidence of someone wearing new glasses they love.

The reassurance of a nervous visitor leaving with a smile.

And the countless people across Burton and beyond whose lives have been improved through better vision and better care.
