Meadowside Leisure Centre in Burton is undergoing a major refurbishment, with upgrades now underway in the changing village and nearby facilities.

Everyone Active, in partnership with East Staffordshire Borough Council, has launched the project following customer feedback requesting modern improvements.

The works will transform the existing changing areas, toilets, shower area, Changing Places room, and the teaching pool spectator space.

The project is set to last four to five weeks, with temporary adjustments for visitors.

Swimming lessons and general swim sessions will continue, though guests are asked to arrive “swim ready” to ease pressure on the facilities.

Some showers and toilets will close at later stages, but alternative changing options and accessible toilets will remain available.

With completion expected before spring, the centre promises a refreshed experience for families, swimmers, and fitness fans across the community.

Burton’s iconic Winshill Water Tower, standing tall since 1907 on Waterloo Clump, could soon be transformed from a historic utility to one of the borough's most unique homes.

Plans submitted to East Staffordshire Borough Council propose changing the disused water tower into a luxurious single residence, complete with a five-bedroom layout, en-suite dressing rooms, a home office, a lift, and a panoramic roof terrace overlooking Burton.

If approved, the scheme also includes demolishing outbuildings for an extension and a new garage.

While the tower no longer pumps water and now serves as a radio mast, it remains an enduring local landmark.

An ecology survey found no roosting bats on site, though checks will continue to ensure wildlife protection.

The future of this familiar structure now rests with the council’s decision, promising a new chapter for one of Burton’s most recognisable buildings.

East Staffordshire Borough Council has approved plans for over £33 million in investment as part of its 2026/27 budget, promising major improvements for Burton and the surrounding area.

Key highlights include £4.19 million in new service investment and a £33.7 million capital programme targeting long-term projects across the borough.

Residents will soon see a dedicated food waste collection service, backed by £873,000 in funding for new vehicles and equipment.

Burton Market Hall will benefit from £1.4 million for urgent roof repairs as regeneration work continues.

The council is earmarking £11.1 million for priorities such as the new Washlands Visitor Centre, and further funds for council building upgrades and Disabled Facilities Grants.

Support for vulnerable residents remains central, with over £3 million allocated for cost of living measures and more than £375,000 set aside for temporary accommodation.

This budget aims to strengthen local services while supporting regeneration and those most in need.

Burton Library is set to delight young readers and their families as it hosts World Book Day on Thursday, 5 March.

This annual celebration encourages children to discover the joy of reading, offering every child the chance to own a book for free.

For the third year running, Burton Library will be an official hub for free book giveaways, featuring 12 handpicked titles — including classics by Roald Dahl and Jamie Smart’s Bunny vs Monkey series.

Families can claim their books until Sunday, 15 March, while supplies last.

Hayley Coles of Staffordshire County Council hailed the initiative, highlighting the library’s role as a community hub and its commitment to inspiring young imaginations.

World Book Day also delivers £1 vouchers via schools for use in local bookshops.

Burton Library continues to shine as a welcoming center, supporting children’s love of stories and learning.

Work is set to start on Burton’s highly anticipated Old Brewery Quarter development, a landmark project aiming to breathe new life into the town centre while honoring its revered brewing heritage.

Seddon Construction will lead the first phase, following planning approval last autumn, with preparatory works kicking off this spring.

Early efforts include demolishing Trent House, Carling House Data Centre, and the adjacent Workshop, plus laying essential groundwork for future stages.

It may be an early step, but it signals bigger things ahead - from new cultural venues and leisure spaces to opportunities for learning and community use.

The scheme builds on recent regeneration around the Washlands and adds fresh momentum to wider efforts to strengthen Burton’s High Street.

By connecting historic brewery landmarks with modern public spaces, the Old Brewery Quarter aims to bring new energy to the town centre and encourage both residents and visitors to rediscover what makes Burton unique.

Wendy Haines Travel -
Where Personal Service Meets Global Adventure

If you’ve ever wondered whether using a local travel agent still makes sense in the age of online booking sites, this week’s feature might just change your mind.

I recently sat down with Wendy Haines of Wendy Haines Travel, based at the charming “Holiday Hut” in Craythorne Courtyard, Stretton, to hear how she’s spent over 35 years helping people turn travel dreams into unforgettable memories.

From beach weddings in Mauritius to honeymoons in Antarctica and even marriage proposals over the Masai Mara, Wendy has quite literally seen - and arranged - it all. But what really stood out to me wasn’t just the destinations. It was the level of personal care. When clients book with Wendy, they get her direct number. If something goes wrong while they’re away, she’s there. That peace of mind is something no comparison website can offer.

We also talked about the phenomenal success of Wendy’s Wanderers - her travel community for solo ladies. With over 1,100 members and multiple sell-out trips each year, it’s become far more than just holidays.

It’s friendships, confidence, laughter, and shared adventures across the globe - all starting right here in Burton.

Add in national industry awards, a growing team, and a deep commitment to supporting local charities and community groups, and it’s clear Wendy isn’t just booking holidays - she’s building something special.
