Swadlincote Solar Farm Approved by Energy Secretary Ed Miliband

Controversial Oaklands Farm Solar Park to Proceed Despite Local Opposition

Exclusive

In a significant development for renewable energy in Derbyshire, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has approved the Oaklands Farm Solar Park, a large-scale solar and energy storage project near Swadlincote. The £80 million initiative, spearheaded by BayWa r.e. UK Ltd., is set to cover over 472 acres between Walton-on-Trent and Rosliston, generating 140 megawatts of electricity—enough to power approximately 35,000 homes annually. [baywa-re.co.uk]

The decision has sparked considerable debate within the local community. Councillor Amy Wheelton, representing the Seales ward and a vocal opponent of the project, described the approval as "soul-destroying" and "shortsighted." She emphasised concerns over the loss of valuable farmland, noting that 67% of the site comprises high-quality agricultural land. Wheelton stated, "Food security is national security. Once farmland is gone and the farmers have gone, it will not come back." [roslistonparishcouncil.gov.uk]

Despite opposition from both Derbyshire County Council and South Derbyshire District Council, the project's scale necessitated a decision at the national level. Miliband justified the approval by highlighting the project's alignment with the government's objectives for energy supply and net-zero emissions. He assigned "very great positive weight" to the development, considering the temporary loss of agricultural land to have "little negative weight" in the planning balance.

BayWa r.e. UK Ltd. has committed to community engagement throughout the project's development. Managing Director Christine McGregor emphasised the company's dedication to local consultation, stating, "We deeply value local engagement and have listened closely to stakeholders to ensure the development delivers lasting benefits to South Derbyshire."

The Oaklands Farm Solar Park is part of a broader national strategy to expand renewable energy infrastructure. Miliband has recently approved several large-scale solar projects, underscoring the government's commitment to achieving energy independence and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. However, these decisions have been met with criticism from rural communities concerned about the impact on agricultural land and local landscapes.

As the project moves forward, ongoing dialogue between developers, local authorities, and residents will be crucial to address concerns and ensure that the benefits of renewable energy are balanced with the preservation of Derbyshire's rural heritage.
