Operation Clampdown Targets Untaxed Cars and Parking Offences Across Burton on Trent

Residents across Burton on Trent may have noticed increased enforcement activity this week - and for good reason. A joint operation involving East Staffordshire Borough Council and partner agencies has led to dozens of local vehicles - mainly cars - being flagged, fined, clamped, or even removed from the streets.

On 23 April 2026, council teams joined forces with the DVLA and Staffordshire County Council’s Parking Enforcement for the latest round of Operation Clampdown. The initiative focused on several areas of Burton, including Anglesey, Stapenhill, Shobnall, Horninglow and Winshill, with particularly high numbers of untaxed vehicles found on Uxbridge Street and Canal Street.

This wasn’t just a routine check - it was a targeted effort to deal with vehicles causing ongoing frustration for local residents, from untaxed cars and abandoned motors to inconsiderate parking.

What action was taken?

The results paint a clear picture of the scale of the issue:

  • 139 vehicles identified without valid road tax using ANPR technology. These vehicle owners will receive fines by post.
  • 8 cars seized and removed by the DVLA after going more than two months without tax.
  • 3 vehicles clamped on the spot.
  • 28 parking fines issued in Shobnall alone for breaches such as illegal or obstructive parking.
  • 3 abandoned vehicles flagged, with notices now issued for their removal.

In addition to vehicle enforcement, fly-tipping was also uncovered in parts of Shobnall, and investigations are now underway.

A continued effort across Burton

Councillor Simon Slater, Cabinet Member for Communities and Regulatory Services, highlighted the importance of joint working:

“Operation Clampdown continues to show what we can achieve when we work together to address the issues that residents care about most. We’ve successfully removed vehicles which are causing a public nuisance to residents in Shobnall and identified fly tipping which Council Officers will begin to investigate. It is encouraging to see council teams and partner agencies taking this joined-up approach, and I’d like to thank residents for sharing the information that helped shape and support this operation.”

What this means for local drivers

This operation sends a clear message: vehicles in Burton on Trent - especially cars without valid tax or parked illegally - are firmly in the council’s sights. Whether it’s a forgotten tax renewal or a car left sitting too long, enforcement teams are actively identifying and acting on problem vehicles.

And this is just the beginning. Operation Clampdown is set to continue rolling out across other parts of the borough, so drivers are being encouraged to check their vehicle tax, park responsibly, and avoid becoming the next statistic.
