Council Greenlights Initial Phases of Burton High Street Project |
East Staffordshire Borough Council approves Towns Fund allocation for exciting Burton development |
You may remember that back in February, details were released of a major new development in the area near Burton Library and between High Street and the Washlands.
Here's what we said in the InBurton Insider on the 27th February...
"So, what’s in store? At the heart of the project, Bass House will be transformed into a Brewing Heritage and Social History Experience, complete with the National Brewery Heritage Archive. The nearby Town House is set for a stylish refurbishment, The Water Tower will become an exciting interactive attraction, and a brand-new outdoor venue will provide space for festivals, public events, and everyday leisure activities.
But that’s not all! A brand-new Washlands Visitor Centre, developed in partnership with Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, will offer exhibition space, educational activities, and a cosy café. Meanwhile, Carling House is getting a fresh new look as a modern hotel, ensuring visitors have a new stylish place to stay while enjoying everything Burton has to offer."
Today, East Staffordshire Borough Council has announced that it has approved the allocation of Towns Fund resources to finance the initial three phases of the Burton High Street Project, setting the stage for significant developments over the next two years.
The phased approach encompasses:
Phase 1: Site preparation, including the demolition of Trent House and Carling House Data Centre.
Phase 2: Initial conversion of The Water Tower and commencement of works on the Washlands Visitor Centre and Plaza.
Phase 3: Initial restoration of Bass House and conversion of its rear section.
This strategy aims to expedite key elements of the development, allowing residents and visitors to benefit sooner.
This announcement marks a significant milestone in Burton upon Trent's regeneration efforts. The first part of the High Street development, focusing on enhancing The Washlands, is slated for completion by summer 2025.
Looking ahead, a major step will be the announcement of the proposed food and beverage unit occupier within Bass House. The Council is in advanced discussions with a respected hospitality operator to provide a high-quality, relaxed all-day food and drinks offering. Further details are expected later this year. |
