Good News for Burton Recycling: Cartons Now Welcome in the Blue Bin ♻️

Juice, soup and long-life milk cartons can now go straight into your blue recycling bin.

Burton residents have one more item they can now pop into their blue recycling bin - food and drink cartons such as Tetra Pak.

Until recently, cartons used for things like fruit juice, long-life milk, soups, and custard couldn’t be recycled through household collections in our area. But that’s now changed.

The update comes after the Government required waste collection authorities across the country to start accepting cartons for recycling.

That means Burton households can now place empty food and drink cartons directly into their blue bin, making it easier than ever to recycle more from home.

Cartons are made from a mix of materials, including cardboard, plastic and sometimes aluminium, which can all be separated and recycled at specialist facilities. By including them in the blue bin collection, more of these materials can now be reused rather than going to waste.

While you’re at it, it’s worth remembering that the blue bin already accepts quite a wide range of items, including:

  • Steel and aluminium cans and tins
  • Glass bottles and jars (lids removed)
  • Plastic bottles and milk bottles
  • Margarine tubs, yoghurt pots and plastic containers
  • Plastic cups, plates and cutlery
  • Clean aluminium foil and food trays
  • Aerosol cans
  • Plastic food trays (except black ones)

The key rule is to give items a quick rinse and make sure they’re empty before recycling.

Adding cartons to the list is a small change that could make a big difference. After all, those juice and soup cartons soon add up - and now they can start a new life instead of heading for landfill.

So next time you finish a carton of orange juice or tomato soup, just flatten it and drop it in the blue bin. Burton’s recycling just got a little bit easier. ♻️
