Burton Sets Its Sights on UK Town of Culture 2028 |
A £3 million prize, a year of celebration, and a chance to tell Burton’s story on the national stage. |
Burton upon Trent is ready to step into the national spotlight.
The town has officially entered the new UK Town of Culture competition – a prestigious award inspired by the hugely successful UK City of Culture programme – with a bid built on brewing heritage, creative energy and unmistakable community spirit.
One town will be crowned UK Town of Culture 2028, securing £3 million to deliver a year-long programme of cultural activity. Two runners-up will each receive £250,000 to bring their boldest cultural ideas to life.
In short: it’s a big opportunity. And Burton fancies its chances. Celebrating People, Place and Progress
The bid shines a light on everything that makes Burton… well, Burton. From historic landmarks and our famous brewing legacy to grassroots community initiatives and vibrant town centre events, the entry will showcase the town’s growing cultural offer. Think enhanced Washlands, buzzing festivals, and heritage sites finding new life.
East Staffordshire Borough Council is leading the charge, working in partnership with local businesses, community groups and organisations to ensure the bid genuinely reflects the town’s character.
The Town of Culture entry will also highlight Burton’s approach to regeneration – where heritage, creativity and community come together to preserve and reimagine spaces for future generations.
Culture at the Heart of the Community
Cllr Paul Walker, Cabinet Member for Tourism and Cultural Development, said:
The reference to the enhanced Washlands will resonate with anyone who has enjoyed a riverside stroll lately, while the success of the Sonic Boom Festival and the transformation taking place at the Old Brewery Quarter show that culture here isn’t just history – it’s happening now. Get Involved
The Council is inviting local organisations to share their ideas and help shape Burton’s entry.
If you’re part of a group, business or organisation with a cultural spark to add, you can get involved by contacting: marketing@eaststaffsbc.gov.uk
For a town that built a global reputation on beer, Burton has never been short on ambition. Now, it’s about showing the country that our culture is just as strong as our brewing heritage.
Watch this space – 2028 could be a very exciting year indeed.
