🚲 Burton Cycleway Extension Hits Stage 2 – Here’s What You Need to Know

Road closures in place as £1.2m Burton town centre cycle route enters second phase

Burton Roads

The £1.2 million cycleway upgrade in Burton town centre has officially rolled into its second phase - and if you’ve been dodging cones and diversion signs around Borough Road lately, you’re not imagining things.

This major project, delivered by Staffordshire County Council, is extending the existing Station Street cycleway all the way to Burton railway station, connecting it directly with the Town Hall via a new two-way cycle track. The aim? To make it easier (and safer) to walk, wheel, or cycle around the town centre - whether you're commuting, heading into town, or just out for a spin.

What’s happening now?

The latest phase of works involves:

  • A road closure on Borough Road between Station Court and the Curzon Street junction

  • A lane closure from there up to the Wellington Street junction

  • Diversions in place via Station Street, Union Street, Orchard Street, Evershed Way, Shobnall Road and Wellington Street

This part of the project is expected to last about five weeks, after which crews will take a two-week break from Sunday 15 February, allowing other essential road maintenance in the area to take place without causing complete gridlock.

More than just a bike lane

Alongside the cycle track itself, workers are also:

  • Resurfacing sections of road and footpath

  • Upgrading traffic signals and bus stops

  • Repainting road markings

So even if you’re not on two wheels, you’ll still benefit from a smoother and smarter route once it’s all wrapped up.

Councillor Peter Mason, Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways, said:

“It's great to see this important scheme progressing well. Linking the railway station to the Town Hall with a dedicated cycle route will make it far easier and safer for people to walk, wheel or cycle around Burton, supporting a more active way of getting around the town centre.

“We fully appreciate that roadworks can be disruptive, and I’d like to thank people for their patience while this phase takes place. Our crews are working hard to minimise disruption and keep everything on schedule. We’re also pausing construction for a short period in February to avoid overloading the network while other essential maintenance is carried out nearby.

“When complete, this investment will bring long‑term benefits for residents, commuters and visitors, and will play a key part in making Burton a more accessible and better‑connected place.”

The scheme is being funded through a combination of £990,000 from East Staffordshire’s Town Deal allocation and a £220,000 top-up from Staffordshire County Council.

We’ll continue to keep you posted on progress - and as always, if you’ve got a favourite shortcut while the cones are out, let us know!
