Burton’s new town centre cycleway has officially opened after months of roadworks and traffic disruption, marking a significant milestone for local travel.
The two-way route, stretching from the railway station to the Town Hall along Borough Road, offers cyclists and walkers a smoother, safer journey through the heart of Burton.
Staffordshire County Council managed the £1.2 million project, completed over five months, as part of wider efforts to promote active travel in the area.
The improvements include a resurfaced cycle track, upgraded bus stops, modernised traffic signals, and safer pavements, benefiting all who travel through the centre.
Funding came from East Staffordshire Borough Council’s Town Deal and the county council, reflecting a coordinated push to upgrade local transport links.
The finished route now better connects Burton’s key destinations with surrounding neighbourhoods and the National Cycle Network.
For residents, the changes promise easier, safer journeys - on bike, foot, or bus. Read More... |
Burton’s historic Market Hall is poised to reopen on Thursday, 28 May after a £1.49 million roof restoration brought new life to the Victorian landmark.
Local firm JAL Roofing replaced the slate roof and installed modern glazing, preserving the charm of the Grade II listed building while brightening its interior.
Now, East Staffordshire Borough Council has unveiled plans to transform the hall into a vibrant hub for food, drink, shopping, and entertainment.
Proposals include a bustling food hall with six street food kitchens, a central bar, live music venue in the old fish market, and revamped piazza-style outdoor spaces.
Traditional markets will return alongside specialist pop-ups and cultural events - an effort to boost local makers and attract independent businesses.
The hall will open Thursday to Saturday during the interim, ahead of major regeneration set for 2027, promising a reinvigorated heart for Burton town centre. Read More... |
