Sonic Boom Festival Returns with Free Town Centre Stage and Indie Stars Pale Waves

Burton’s biggest music festival is turning the volume up once again this September - and the best part is you won’t need a ticket to enjoy the main event.

Sonic Boom Festival returns to Burton upon Trent on Saturday 12 September, bringing a full afternoon and evening of live music to the town centre, with a free major outdoor stage taking over Market Place from 1pm onwards.

Headlining this year’s festival are indie favourites Pale Waves, fronted by singer and guitarist Heather Baron-Gracie. The Manchester band have built a huge following with a string of Top 10 singles and chart success including their album Who Am I?, which reached number one on the Official Independent Albums Chart.

But while the headline act is grabbing attention, organisers are keen to stress that the Main Stage in Burton’s Market Place will once again be completely free to attend, with thousands expected to gather in the town centre throughout the day and into the evening.

And for anyone who still thinks “festival” automatically means “£9 chips and a wristband the colour of a highlighter pen,” Sonic Boom continues to do things differently.

Alongside Pale Waves, this year’s Main Stage lineup includes The Lilacs, The League of Rebelz, Vona Vella, Terrianne and The Missing Diamonds, mixing rising national artists with emerging talent in what has become one of Burton’s standout cultural events.

BBC Radio 6 Music presenter Chris Hawkins will return to host the Main Stage for 2026.

He said:

“Sonic Boom is exactly the kind of event Burton deserves – free, forward-looking and entirely about original music. Every time I come back, the ambition has grown. The lineup this year is brilliant and I’m proud to be part of a festival that puts real opportunity at the heart of what it does.”

Now entering its third year, Sonic Boom has quickly established itself as a major date in Burton’s calendar, even earning a shortlist spot for Independent Festival of the Year at the UK Festival Awards.

The festival is produced through a partnership between East Staffordshire Borough Council and Sonic Boom Music CIC, with funding from the council.

Councillor Paul Walker, Cabinet Member for Tourism and Cultural Development, said:

“I’m looking forward to seeing Sonic Boom Festival return in 2026, with another exciting line up of local and international artists. The festival has become a real highlight in Burton’s social calendar, helping revitalise the town centre and is a testament to the Council’s approach of developing cultural activity in tandem with local people and stakeholders.”

Chris Baldwin, Director of Sonic Boom Music CIC, added:

“Pale Waves headlining Sonic Boom Festival 2026 is a statement - a not just about one band or one organisation, but about what Burton upon Trent is becoming. A place worth coming to.

Alongside them, we’ve curated a main stage that reflects exactly what Sonic Boom Festival stands for: original music, real voices, and a platform that moves from local roots to global momentum."

“This isn’t a local festival punching above its weight. This is the right lineup, on the right stage, in the right town, at the right time. See you down the front!”

Following the free Main Stage programme in Market Place, Sonic Boom’s “Aftershock” events will continue across venues around Burton later into the night, with entry charges applying at participating venues.

Full line-ups and ticket details for those performances are expected in the coming months.

But at the centre of it all will once again be Market Place - transformed into a giant open-air gig from 1pm, completely free to attend, and proof that Burton can still throw a proper town-centre party when it wants to.
