📅 What’s On in Burton This Week

Good morning and welcome to this week’s InBurton Insider!

There’s certainly no shortage of reasons to leave the sofa this weekend. We’ve got live music galore, Northern Soul, an 80s night, a Bavarian night, wedding fayres, a children’s market and even a Pirelli anniversary open day. Your diary may need a diary.

Away from the weekend fun, there’s some welcome news for anyone who spends a little too much of their life behind a steering wheel: Henhurst Hill junction is reopening, and there’s progress on tackling some of our local potholes too. 🚗

Plus, we’ve rounded up the latest Business Bites, checked the weekend weather, and hunted down the cheapest petrol and diesel prices around Burton and Swad.

Right then, kettle on - here’s what’s happening in and around Burton this week… ☕👇

Bite-sized updates from the businesses that help make Burton tick.

⚽ Burton Albion were beaten 3-1 at home by Huddersfield on Saturday, with a number of costly mistakes gifting the visitors some easy goals.

🚧 A £730,000 resurfacing project on Bretby Lane begins on Monday 12 October and is expected to last around two months. The first month will use temporary traffic lights, followed by daytime road closures for the remaining work.

⭐ The Queen Bees in Concert 🎶

📅 Friday 16th October | ⏰ 7.30pm
📍 St Peter’s Church, Marchington
🎟️ £10 adults | £8 under-16s | Accompanied under-12s FREE

If three-part harmonies, familiar tunes and a good old-fashioned singalong sound like your kind of Friday night, The Queen Bees are buzzing into St Peter’s Church in Marchington for a special fundraising concert.

The seven-strong local group have been performing together for almost a decade, with a repertoire stretching from Vera Lynn and The Andrews Sisters to The Beatles, ABBA, musical favourites, country hits and more recent chart-toppers. In other words, there should be something to get just about every generation tapping a toe.

Even better, it’s all for a good local cause, with proceeds going towards St Peter’s Church Memorial Appeal.

🍷 Tickets include a glass of wine and are available from Marchington Village Shop.

A lovely local night out, some cracking tunes and money raised for the village church - not a bad return for a tenner. 🎵

Drivers in Burton will be able to use Henhurst Hill again from Friday 9 October, when the full closure at its junction with Postern Road and Hopley Road ends.

Temporary traffic lights will control vehicles while crews complete the £500,000 four-way junction, which Staffordshire County Council says will improve road safety and manage traffic.

The scheme has passed its halfway point and is expected to finish in about a month, with the reopening coming ahead of October’s Screamfest at National Forest Adventure Farm.

Crews have also brought forward pothole repairs, remodelled the bus stop and installed signs extending the 30mph limit along Henhurst Hill, with a 40mph buffer zone on the approach.

Elsewhere, 7.5-tonne weight restrictions are now in force on stretches of the B5017 and B5234 following residents’ concerns about HGV noise, particularly at night.

Staffordshire Police are responsible for enforcement, while HGV drivers can still reach Burton via the A38, A511 and A515.

Burton motorists may notice fewer bumps after Staffordshire County Council recorded its busiest month yet for pothole repairs in September.

Highways crews fixed 5,067 road defects across Staffordshire, more than double the 2,498 repaired in the same month last year and the first time the monthly total has passed 5,000.

The countywide figure is not a tally for Burton alone, but local roads maintained by the council are included in its highways programme.

Good weather helped crews make progress, while methods including velocity patching and screeding allowed them to tackle suitable potholes and larger damaged areas more efficiently.

The council says the work is helping it address a longstanding backlog and move towards its target of repairing 40,000 potholes by April 2027.

Residents can report defects on county-maintained roads through the council’s online highways reporting service.
