Will Burton Be Buried in Snow – or Just Lightly Dusted?

Storm Goretti set to bring heavy snow to the Midlands - but will Burton see a blizzard or just a bit of bother?

The Midlands is bracing for what some are calling the most significant snowfall in 20 years, expected to arrive tomorrow (Thursday) evening. Storm Goretti is sweeping in with a wintry wallop, and if the forecasts hold true, it could rival the big snow years of 2010 and 2018.

Forecasters are warning of:

  • Up to 30cm (that’s a whole foot) of snow in parts of the Midlands

  • Strong winds around 40mph, possibly causing drifting and very poor visibility

  • A heavy snow band stretching from Buxton down to the M4 corridor, with the central Midlands – including areas near the Peak District – seeing over 20cm

  • Birmingham sitting in a zone that could receive anywhere between 4 and 12 inches

Elsewhere, moderate snowfall of 2–10cm (1–4 inches) is expected across inland Wales, Northern England, the Pennines, and potentially the southeast, with snow possibly lingering into Friday.

But here in Burton on Trent? Well, we’ve seen dramatic forecasts before – and often ended up with little more than a dusting and a few slushy pavements. While we’re definitely in the broader target zone, there’s still uncertainty about where exactly the heaviest snow will fall. A slight shift north or south could make a big difference.

So, should you stock up on hot chocolate and dig the sledge out of the garage? Probably not a bad idea. But equally, we might just wake up to a light covering and business as usual.

As always, we’ll keep an eye on how it develops – and if the snow does arrive in force, at least Burton's looking set for a picturesque Friday morning.
