All the Good Stuff Happening in Burton!

Thursday 3rd September 2026

πŸ“… What’s On in Burton This Week

Hello and welcome to this week’s InBurton Insider.

September has arrived, but Burton certainly isn’t easing quietly into autumn. This weekend brings live music galore, Burton Albion back at the Pirelli, fireworks, markets, a teddy festival, tributes, karaoke and plenty more – so there’s no shortage of excuses to get out of the house.

Elsewhere in this week’s Insider, we’ve got a fresh helping of Business Bites, an update on the next chapter for Tutbury Castle, important information about East Staffordshire’s new social housing register, plus the latest petrol and diesel prices and a look at what the weekend weather has in store.

In short, everything you need for the weekend ahead – apart from someone to decide what you’re doing first. Let’s get into it…

The next chapter for Tutbury Castle, one of East Staffordshire’s most cherished historic sites, is postponed as major maintenance and conservation efforts continue on the landmark.

The Duchy of Lancaster will now officially hand over the site to Bespoke Hospitality later this autumn, rather than on the original schedule.

This extra time allows extensive investment into vital repairs, aiming to safeguard the castle’s rich heritage and prepare it for a vibrant future.

Once the transition is complete, Bespoke Hospitality plans to begin its own improvements, with a target to reopen the castle to the public in spring 2027.

Upcoming September events - including a Community Open Day and Wedding Fair - are still set to take place, giving residents a chance to get involved and share their visions for the castle’s future.

East Staffordshire Borough Council has launched a new online Housing Register, allowing Burton and other local residents to apply for social housing under a revamped policy.

The system, which went live 1 September, aims to allocate the area’s limited social homes more fairly by prioritising applicants with the greatest housing need.

If you’re already on the waiting list, check recent council letters or emails - many existing applicants must re-register or risk losing their place, as old priority bands won't transfer automatically.

The deadline to re-apply is 1 December 2026, though some residents may not need to re-register unless their circumstances have changed.

Applicants must meet eligibility criteria, often including a local connection, and supply up-to-date household details and supporting evidence when requested.

Despite the updates, demand for social housing in East Staffordshire remains high, and acceptance onto the register does not guarantee a home.
